Course Overview:
Delivery Options:
- Public Hands-On Training
- Onsite Training
- Live Online (simulation-based)
Length: 2-days (16 hrs)
Percentage Hands-On: 60-75%
Prerequisite: Qualified electrical worker (QEW) status, plus BELTS or equivalent electrical fundamentals
Best value: take it right after BELTS as the 5-day BELTS/MCTS Combo BootCamp
Description:
Motor control systems are everywhere in industrial plants, and they cause a large share of maintenance headaches, downtime and safety incidents when people do not understand them. This course takes students from the electrical fundamentals of BELTS into the motor control equipment they work on every day.
Students work on industrial-grade hardware: contactors, overload relays, starters, a 24 VDC control circuit and real 3-phase induction motors. Every topic includes inserted faults, so students practise finding the root cause with a systematic troubleshooting method rather than swapping parts.
What students learn:
- Motor nameplates, hookup and dual-voltage (wye/delta) connections
- Motor testing: continuity, insulation resistance (megger) and phase rotation
- Contactors and overload relays: how they work, sizing, trip classes and common failures
- 3-wire start/stop control with seal-in, and reversing starters with mechanical and electrical interlocks
- Reading motor control ladder diagrams and one-line diagrams
- VFD basics: setup, ramps, common fault codes and wiring practices
- Systematic troubleshooting of inserted faults, root-cause thinking and retest requirements
Who should attend:
Industrial maintenance technicians and electricians, and process or control technicians stepping into motor control responsibilities. Students must be qualified electrical workers with BELTS or equivalent fundamentals.
Online option:
A live online, simulation-based version is also offered. All motor-starter and higher-voltage work is done safely in Orion's simulators.
