Course Overview:
Delivery Options:
Length: 1-day
Percent Hands-on: 33-50%
Description:
This 1-day course introduces students to the basic principles and concepts associated with core instrumentation measurements and calibration practices.
This course builds a basic familiarity with core concepts, terminology, and basic principles required to make sense of modern instrumentation sensors, transmitters, and calibration work. Students completing this course will be prepared for further learning via references, OJT, or classroom training on equipment specifics and will be better able to communicate with and support engineers, vendors, and other support personnel and will have a fundamental base to build upon.
This course includes considerable hands-on exercises and practical demonstrations, and is designed to help students gain familiarity and confidence with common instrumentation systems.

Course Agenda (Full Day):
• 4-20mA control loop basics
• SMART transmitter basics
• Instrument calibration basics
• Common instrument problems and issues
• Instrument troubleshooting primer
Course Outcomes:
• Gain familiarity with the 4-20mA control loop
• Gain exposure to troubleshooting typical I&C loop problems
• Understand the basic operation of modern SMART transmitters
• Gain awareness of diagnostic capabilities of modern instrumentation
• Learn the common mistakes, problems, faults, and issues in typical I&C measurements and loops.
• Understand basics of instrument calibration and recognize common mistakes and problems.
• Learn to use common I&C test equipment such as Fluke Process Meters and Hart Communicators.
Hands-On Exercises:
This course includes approximately 33% hands-on exercises and live practical demonstrations to allow students to see, visualize, and apply core concepts in realistic ways to enhance retention and application back at work.
The labs for this course are focused on the areas that are typically harder to learn and/or that are more critical and often misunderstood.
Some of the hands-on exercises for this course include:
• 4-20mA loop concepts and signal loop troubleshooting
• Introduction to Smart transmitters
• Transmitter configurations
• Introduction to sensor and transmitter diagnostics and troubleshooting
• RTD, thermocouple and temperature transmitter loop troubleshooting (sample loop)
• Instrument loop calibration and problem solving
